Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to speak to dental students at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. After navigating through all the construction Postle Hall, it was a fun time meeting with a small group of D3’s & D4’s, eating some delicious Adriatico’s Pizza and talking about some topics regarding the business and career of dentistry that dental school students generally do not get much exposure to.
The presentation was titled, “Practice Ownership 101: Career Options and Navigating the Journey Towards Practice Ownership”, here is a link to the Presentation Slides. The idea of the discussion was to highlight some of the underlying factors which are impacting the industry and dentists in their career choices, providing an unfiltered and encouraging overview of ways dentists can maximize their career in terms of satisfaction and income potential.
There was a lot of questions from the students and I was encouraged by the overall level of awareness among the group. Many of the students had been listing to podcasts, joining business clubs or diverse backgrounds which highlighted to them some of the challenges and opportunities that new dentists will face early in their careers.
Here Gabriel A. Quiñones had to say about the presentation. “I reached out to Brian after hearing him as a guest on the Shared Practices podcast and invited him to give a guest lecture to a group of my classmates and colleagues at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Brian has a wealth of experience in practice ownership and acquisition, and was very open and willing to talk to our group about what we can be doing now, as current dental students, to prepare for success later. His presentation was insightful and informative, and we all left with new questions to ask before buying our first practice.”
Thanks to all the students who attended and made it such an interactive discussion, hope to do it again next year.
